Elinchrom ELB500 TTL in the studio with Lulu Cole

Lulu Cole is one of those wonderful people who walks into a studio & immediately brightens your day!

This frame is from a session we shot late in 2018 at a studio in Sunny Sussex, near to where I live. I've worked with Elinchrom flash for many years and love how they just fit with the way I work. They're compact, lightweight, simple to use and backward compatible with other Elinchrom studio & battery flashes.

For this session I used two separate Elinchrom battery flashes, a single ELB500 TTL as my key light, modified with a *original 44cm Light Shaper with Tough Spun diffusion and the honeycomb grid in place. The rim light was a Ranger Quadra 400 with a **44 cm white beauty dish, white deflector & white shower cap front diffuser, so essentially a perfectly round soft box.

Legacy modifier on a modern battery flash

The 44 cm Light Shaper creates light with deep shadows and a relatively short edge transition. It's similar in contrast to a beauty dish, with a straight edge which is useful when precise control is needs, such as when feathering the light. Here it's in use on a lightweight stand with my 16mm steel tube boom. With the small & lightweight flash heads of the ELB5000 TTL heavier light stands are not required unless larger & heavier modifier/shapers are used.

The Elinchrom ELSP-HS flash (Canon) controller receives signals from both my original Quadra battery pack & that of the ELB500 TTL, triggering both and allowing power control from a single point. If all flash battery packs are switched on the controller will search & find any units, current or legacy automatically. If not, there's a search facility at the top of the main menu.

* The standard ELB500 TTL heads require the Q mount to EL adaptor  in order to use standard EL fit modifier/shapers.

** Turned off for this particular frame.

Elinchrom have reintroduced the 44 cm Square Reflector available from The Flash Centre in UK.

That's is for now, questions and feedback are always welcome.

That's it for now and don't forget if you really enjoy lighting to visit and join The LIGHT Side - a place to learn, be mentored, nurtured and learn about lighting, lighting and photography, whatever your level or experience.
