Photographing Allium blooms with Pixapro PIKA 200 Godox AD200

Here in sunny Sussex the Alliums are coming into bloom. One of the best ways that I have found to to create the best photos of these glorious blooms is to light them with battery outdoor flash.

Allium hollandicum Purple Sensation

This bloom was lit with the GODOX AD-S7 Folding 48cm 19" Multipurpose Softbox and Folding Beauty Dish with the opaque matt silver deflector in place. The modifier was feathered away so the light reflected from the camera right side hit the hit the bloom for a backlit sidelight look.

Without the flash the image was flat and lacked punch.

A Canon 100 mm Æ’/2.8 macro IS L Series lens was used on the full frame Canon 5D MkII. The aperture was set to Æ’/11 to keep the bloom sharp whilst maintaining a pleasing defocussed background which was about 2m away.

I was able to darken the background by slightly under exposing the camera exposure.
