Hannah Miall and her Brilliantly Boozy Sorbets

I recently had the pleasure of photographing Hannah Miall & her Brilliantly Boozy Sorbets. Hannah used to work for a major UK food retailer and left to follow her dream of building her own food company. Hannah is a talented cook with a liking for cakes and ices. Her sorbets are very tasty indeed and high recommended https://www.mialls.co.uk/shop

We decided that two images were needed, on showing Hannah & her products and one to show the gorgeous deep colour. Hannah is the business so features in both images.

We shot at the Burgess Hill studio against the white infinity curve which gave me a bit of space to work with as I decided to use smoke in the background and trans light it!

Key light was a Elinchrom Ranger Quadra 400, EL adaptor in 44cm white beauty dish with inner white deflector & white shower cap diffuser giving me a perfectly circular soft box.

Fill light Elinchrom ELB500 TTL with 14cm 120º reflector acting as a spill kill in a 105cm Elinchrom shoot through white umbrella.

Effect light Elinchrom Ranger Quadra 400 with 18cm reflector and 2 x layers of CTB gel. All triggered with the Skyport Pro (Canon) trigger which works perfectly with new and old Elinchrom battery flash - that's what I like about Elinchrom cross compatibility. Although to trigger a speedlite or my ancient EL500 mains studio heads I'll need to buy the Skyport Receiver Plus.

Part of the challenge when shooting is thinking about final use - website, print & social media. Each of these need a different crop, much of the time clients are not aware of this. At the top of this page the image has been cropped 16:9 which is ideal for a website banner. The shot of Hannah with the spoon of sorbet cropped portrait which works well for print and square for social media, especially Instagram.

The background was darkened in post by means of a dodge & burn adjustment layer & a blue taken adjustment layer. Had I used a darker background in the studio, possibly less effort would be needed in post!

That's it for now and don't forget if you really enjoy lighting to visit and join The LIGHT Side - a place to learn, be mentored, nurtured and learn about lighting, lighting and photography, whatever your level or experience.
